Recreational Soccer:
WCWAA recreational Soccer supports ages 6 - 16 for both boys and girls. There are 7 age groups supported, U7, U8, U9, U10, U11/U12, U13/U14 and U15/U16. Each of these age groups participate in competitive soccer at a recreational level against other associations in Union County.
The Under 7 and Under 8 divisions play 7v7 soccer with a goalie. The games have referees controlling the game and providing education on penalties and other infractions during the game play. At this level the players are taught skills in dribbling, passing and positioning. Each player plays at least ½ of each game on a pitch sizes ranging from 30 to 40 yards wide x 50 to 60 yards long in four twelve-minute quarters. There is a maximum of 12 players on a team. Where the players subsitute only at the quarter breaks, all players get 50% minimum playing time.
The Under 9, under 10 and Under 11 players play 8 vs 8 with two twenty-five minute halves on a pitch sizing from 40 to 50 yards wide X 60 to 85 yards long.
The Under 12 division and older play on a full field with 11 vs 11 and two thirty-five minute halves. Field sizes vary from 45 to 65 yards wide x 90 to 115 yards long.
The U15/U16 will be an 8v8 age group and will be gender based.
If there is a lack of players per a gender, WCWAA has hte right to form co-ed teams, please make note of this as it does in fact occur from time to time. If you are opposed to this, please state so on your registration.
All ages Under 7 and up play other club teams from other associations, so they travel at times (usually under 45 minute trips).
In recent years, teams from the WCWAA Soccer Program have won over half the Union County soccer tournaments, have put at least 9 teams in the State Rec Cup, and have come home with 1st place in the State championship. The 2000 WCWAA teams came away with 3 State Titles and our 2005 U10 Girls won the State Cup. Unfortunately NCYSA is no longer sponsoring the Rec State Cup.
Our spring season is only an eight-game season (six games are guaranteed) starting the latter part of March. Our fall season goes from the beginning of September until the beginning of November with 8 regular season games and a county tournament (up to 4 games). Fall is our main season with spring serving as a training season.
Please note that our Recreational Soccer program is managed through NCYSA, the State Soccer organization. Their policy is that once your player registers with a Club, like WCWAA, your player is carded for a year, August to August, whether you play soccer both Fall and Spring, your player's card belongs to the Club you registered with for that time frame.
Our program is managed by volunteers that devote over 600 hours each a year to provide one of the best soccer clubs in Union County. These people help to organize teams, set up fields, maintaining the grounds, buy equipment, work with the State Soccer Association and other clubs. If you are interested in volunteering your time, please contact George Sella at
